Performing Arts

All Lucaya International School Performing Arts students are exposed to various fields of the performing arts, including but not limited to drama, spoken word, movement, vocal and instrumental music. Our aim is to have students further explore numerous cultural expressions that reflect creativity, while developing stage awareness and self-expression. The wide range of performance experiences promote individual artistic growth and fulfillment and focus on students’ natural response to musical compositions. We also provide students with the opportunities to create music, movements and drama. 

 

The program embraces inclusivity of the talents and affinities of all students by extending its reach beyond stage performances to involve production, theater management and technical theater. Studies include stage and technical directing, stage management, set, costume, sound and light design. The objective of this approach is to mentor our students to ultimately demonstrate their learning through student-led productions in the middle school years. 

The goal of Music in the Performing Arts Program at LIS is to engage students in Pre K – Year 8 in the active and creative processes of making, listening and responding to music, in line with the 5 elements of music as follows:

  • Performance - Students will be offered the opportunity to perform individually and in ensembles where they can showcase their individual and collective creative talents. Students will gain a sense of pride, self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, motivation, and a drive for excellence not only in music but in life in general.
  • Theory and Composition - Students will journey through music history and discover how music theory practices of the past have shaped our music of today. Concepts will be taught contextually through units of study and applied to a wide variety of materials.
  • Notation - Lucaya International School helps each student develop, strengthen and master musical concepts, elements and skills through understanding and reading music. These skills will enable them to gain proficiency in music and the performing arts.
  • Music appreciation - Students will develop an appreciation for, and enjoyment of music traditions and ceremonies, including music within their own families and cultures and that of other cultures.
  • Music and technology in society - Students will look at 20th Century music and the various styles featured in the cultures of the many countries from around the world. They will be exposed to interactive activities with music applications and collaborations.

The goal of Drama in the Performing Arts Program at LIS is to engage students in Pre K – Year 8 in the active and creative processes of writing, performing and responding to drama, in line with the 5 elements of drama as follows:

 

  • Cast of Characters - The characters are the people that form a part of the story and are entwined with the plot of the drama. At LIS, students learn to portray and develop the art of characterization as they bring characters to life on stage.
  • Setting - The time, era and place where a story is set is key to developing the story and influence the appearance, personality, costume, and make-up of the characters and the staging, central theme, conflicts and interactions between characters.  The interdisciplinary nature of teaching and learning at LIS allows students to not only conceptualize these ideas, but to draw from understanding in all subject areas and garner support from all teachers.
  • Stage Directions - Stage directions are non-spoken texts which serve as instructions in the script of a play, that convey an array of information to the actors, designers, and directors. Stage directions in the performing arts help students at LIS to understand the positive impact of following instructions and reinforces the importance of this life skill.
  • Acts and Scenes - Acts are large portions of a play that contain the main action and reveal the conflict, complications, climax, and resolution. Scenes are smaller portions that make up acts. Working on scenes give students at LIS an opportunity to work collaboratively in small groups and develop analytical skills, while working on acts allow for the building of synthesis skills. 
  • Dialog - The story of a play is conveyed to audiences by means of dialogs. The quality of the delivery of the dialog determines the effect the play has on the audience. This aspect of drama helps to give a unique voice to students at LIS and help them develop and embrace self-expression.  

Many LIS students compete in the National Arts Festival in music and in dramatic performances. Prior to Hurricane Dorian and the Covid 19 Pandemic, the Primary School had a performance/recital for parents each semester, and every other year the Secondary School put on a play/musical performed at the Regency Theater. In past years, students have performed in Willy Wonka, Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, The Lion King and Beauty and The Beast. LIS has had a choir that could be found performing at various island events and competitions. LIS looks forward to reigniting the spirit of the performing arts as our students expand their imagination and explore their emotions.
